Kelley received a shout out from Yahoo Sports’ Shane Bacon in an article highlighting the upcoming Waste Management Open in Scottsdale, AZ –

“What night should I go to the bird’s nest?” — The lineup is a solid one this year, with Metalhead going on Saturday and Weezer jamming out on Friday, but O.A.R. is a staple at the tent each year and will be the biggest draw on Wednesday night.

Who will I be booking to go check out this week? Kelley James, a singer/songwriter that not only kills it with his music, but will pull off a lengthy freestyle brought to you by the audience. It’s definitely a good time and will probably be the most attended by a lot of the PGA Tour players.

Check out the full article here, and if you’re going to the Open, be sure to stop by the Birds Nest to see Kelley open for Weezer.

California singer-songwriter debuts newest full-length album

Scottsdale, Ariz. – National recording artist Kelley James released his newest album The Pattern Transcending today. The full-length album features twelve new tracks including the single “That’s My Girl.” A video preview is available on YouTube and the album can be purchased via iTunes.

James, a California native and lifelong musician, has created a signature style by combining the sounds of acoustic guitars and a traditional rock band ensemble with freestyle rapping and intricate vocal riffs. On The Pattern Transcending, he wanted to bring the best of both styles together as seamlessly as possible.

“If I had to describe the album in one word, it would be ‘mash-up’,” James said. “The drums and bass were all tracked live with the band in the studio. Everything was done in a pretty sparse way after that, at least in terms of overdubs. Using that approach to recording the instruments, I was really able to let my rock side come out. At the same time, I wanted the hip hop element to stay strong throughout the record, so we used some programmed drums and I threw in rap sections at certain points on the album.”

“Mash-up” describes more than just James’ fusing of genres, but applies to the writing and production process as well. While he believes that well-written music speaks for itself, he expressed no qualms about utilizing new technology in the process of creating the album.

“This album is the true progression of where my live sound and studio vibe meet,” James said. “The strongest songs still stand up with just a vocal and an acoustic guitar or piano, which is how I write most of the music. But, I have been writing a lot to different programmed beats and samples. There are so many things that I do now that weren’t possible ten years ago. Technology drives everything we do in life and music is no exception.”

James has built his career on the road playing over 750 shows in the past five years. As the creator of The Sorority and Fraternity Tour he has played at colleges nationwide and partnered with Oakley and Muscle Milk to sponsor the tour. He has shared the stage with acts such as LMFAO, Mike Posner, O.A.R., Kate Voegele and Joshua Radin and has opened shows at venues from House of Blues Chicago to Red Rocks. He has sold out shows at the Troubadour, Roxy and Key Club in Los Angeles, and has held a monthly residency at the W Hotel Scottsdale since 2009 garnering a strong fan base in the area.

Kelley James’ music is a fascinating collection of acoustic guitars, hip-hop beats, thoughtful lyrics and freestyle flows. He is currently working on his new album, set to be released October 1, 2013. His last single “Summertime On My Mind” became a summer anthem and has received recognition from several viral entertainment sites including BroBible, BuzzFeed, ClevverMusic, Mashable and Tone It Up.
