In late October of 2007 I met a guy with plaid pants, an argyle sweater and a metallic gold hat. He was on a boat with me and introduced himself as Billy. We happened to be playing on the “Music Hub’s 3 Hour Tour” that evening and after a few minutes of conversation decided it was absolutely necessary to collaborate on stage that night. After a marathon-tennis-match-freestyle-medley and going over my alloted set time by 15 minutes I knew that wasn’t the last time we’d share a stage together.
Since then I’ve played over 120 shows in so many different cities and venues that the details have become a little blurred and the memories recklessly filed in “the overall experience” section of my brain. But I will tell you, every time I step on stage with this dude I remember the details.

I had to go down to Orange County today to work on some new stuff for my live show (we just got a last minute invite to play at The Maloof Money Cup in Newport Beach this Saturday) … we overshot our drive down there a little bit and headed further south …
My boy John, who lives with Chris and me in Santa Monica, invited us to his uncle’s office in San Diego to hang out for the afternoon. 99.9999% of the time this is a bad idea — unless your uncle is …

My mom bought me my first skateboard at Sport-Mart when I was in 6th grade. To say the least, this was a ”low budget” piece of equipment. It was probably made for a few dollars in some country that didn’t even have paved roads, making this slab of wood with four small urethane wheels quite mysterious to the assembler. Regardless, I rode that thing until it was no longer functional … which meant four days later I ended up borrowing my friend’s extra board for the next few years. I loved skating and was so passionate about it … but let it go when high school hit, and the truly important things in life (football, basketball and girls) became top priority — bummer.
Today though, there was a 11 year old boy named Kelley standing on the half pipe at Tony Hawk’s office watching the magic unfold … and smiling like he’d just got his first skateboard.
My boy Kellen and I went for a run the other day in the hills of Sherman Oaks. After about a mile we saw something in the road that looked like a squirrel. It turned out to be an injured Great Horned Owl that couldn’t fly. We called the humane society and they told us to put a box over it, give them an address where the box was and they’d be there in about 4 hrs to pick it up … I was informed that there was only one guy working after-hours that night, responsible for covering all of LA county (which is only 4000+ sq miles).
We decided to take it upon ourselves to rescue this little guy and bring him to the humane society. Long story short, we spent 2 hrs trying to get the owl into a container – it attempted to fly away twice but couldn’t make it more than 50 yards. After the 2nd attempt we were able to get it, unharmed, in a box and over to the humane society.

Since I was a little kid I always loved shoes. The only problem was that I wasn’t allowed to have more than a few pairs, and the cool ones were always out of the question. Never had Pumps. Never had Jordans. Never had those LA Gear’s that lit up. Had to beg for Teva’s – and no one wants to admit to that.
When I got a little bit older I would go to shoe stores and spend an embarrassing amount of time window shopping … still under the impression that I wasn’t allowed to indulge.
Then near the end of college I met a man named Scotty Crowe who let me know it was okay to own more shoes than the girl you were dating. A few too many pairs later I’m still on the hunt for the next sick pair of limited edition pink anything’s that you’ll never see again.
Our boy Scotty came backstage at the El Rey Theatre with a little surprise …
