Jimmy | August 12, 2008
He'll be missed more than he ever could have imagined.
James Tedrow Gauntt
November 8, 1983-August 9,2008
F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote, "For awhile after you read John Keats all other poetry seems to be only whistling or humming." The same can be said for a person having the privilege of being in the presence of James "Jimmy" Tedrow Gauntt. No on eels was as bright, as talented, as kind, as genuine, or as loving. Jimmy was music, the rest of us mere explanation of its sound. But rarer still, and perhaps even more remarkable, was what Jimmy achieved in his 24 short years here on earth.
Jimmy grew up in Solana Beach and graduated Torrey Pines High School in 2002 with a 4.65 GPA. He was senior class president, played four years of football, three years of track & field, and was voted by his peers to be both Homecoming Prince and recipient of the "nicest guy" award. He was an AP scholar, a Boys State finalist, National Honors Society member, recipient of the Dartmouth Book Award, the Golden Falcon Award, and the prestigious Trustee Scholarship to the University of Southern California.
Jimmy graduated Phi Beta Kappa from USC in 2006, spending a summer studying in Madrid and his senior year in London at Queens College. He was a member of the SAE Fraternity. While fluent in Spanish, his minor at USC, Jimmy majored in English Literature. He was a prolific reader. Inspired by Shakespeare, D.H. Lawrence and James Joyce, among countless others, Jimmy's ineffable talent as a writer was only outmatched by his intense desire to create. Upon the very day of his tragic death where he was accidentally struck by a motorist while a pedestrian, Jimmy had just completed his fourth screenplay titled "Now's the Time." As well as screenplays, Jimmy had a passion for the theatre, both as an actor and in penning 3 plays, two of which were produced and staged. For the play he wrote that was performed by members of the USC theatre department, Jimmy saw fit that a tenor saxophone play in the orchestra to represent the unconscious of its central character, as Jimmy had more than 8 years of saxophone training and experience himself.
Despite all of his ability and genius, despite all of his accomplishments and kindness, Jimmy remained an angel because of his laughter, able to fly simply because he took himself so lightly. Jimmy was hilarious. But he listened. He listened with his whole heart. Every friend, acquaintance and family member understood no greater truth than this: Jimmy cared so much, so sincerely. Forever beaming with the greatest smile, forever full of joy, forever ready to help others find and hold fast to happiness, forever young. Jimmy Gauntt was an artist. He will be missed by those who love him in ways forever unsayable.
He is survived by his parents Casey and Hilary Gauntt, his sister Brittany Gauntt Kirby and brother-in-law Rayn Kirby, his Grandmother Barbara Case Gauntt, Grandparents James and Virginia Tedrow, aunts Laura Gauntt Butie, Ainsley Nies and Leslie Tedrow, and his uncle Grover Gauntt III and their families.

The A-11 Offense:
Spread Option meets Run and Shoot with a sprinkle of the West Coast Offense
2 Quarterbacks
11 potential receivers (all with eligible numbers)
"What makes the offense legal is putting at least one of the quarterbacks 7 yards or more behind the line of scrimmage. As long as no one is in position to receive a hand-to-hand snap from the center, the alignment qualifies as a scrimmage-kick formation and normal numbering rules (a minimum of five players wearing numbers 50 through 79 on the line of scrimmage) don't apply."
A-11 was created at Piedmont High School in Northern California and has been their go to formation for the past two years. 35-40 College Division 1-A coaches have already contacted Piedmont's head coach for more information and training. This could be the dawn of a new era.
For all you football heads out there, just sit back and think of what defenses you would possibly run against this offense – and then try to see yourself as a coach, communicating those complex ideas to a 16 year old defensive back who might be more concerned about scoring some beer for the post game party later that night than adapting your modified version of a Cover 3 to guard eleven potential receivers. If I'm back home in Nor Cal this fall I might just have to swing by a Piedmont High Football game to see this thing live.

When I was a kid I used to hate receiving practical presents. You can call it spoiled, but I just didn’t want my gifts to actually have any kind of function in my life. I wanted my enjoyment temporary and quick, mainlined and dirty, possibly in the form of an $80 yo-yo made from parts of an endangered species. I’d play with that thing, walk the dog (triple entendre?) and lose interest, quickly shredding the wrapping paper off another unpractical gift until the conquest was over.
These days, as sad as it sounds, I love getting presents that actually have function in my life … here’s the quick list (as the 8 year old in me shakes his head) … socks = winner, boxer briefs are another winner and the trump card is a Whole Foods gift card. My people at Muscle Milk must have known about my new affinity for practical presents, because they loaded my UPS guy down with enough love to feed a small nation.

Bushwalla | July 10, 2008
In late October of 2007 I met a guy with plaid pants, an argyle sweater and a metallic gold hat. He was on a boat with me and introduced himself as Billy. We happened to be playing on the "Music Hub's 3 Hour Tour" that evening and after a few minutes of conversation decided it was absolutely necessary to collaborate on stage that night. After a marathon-tennis-match-freestyle-medley and going over my alloted set time by 15 minutes I knew that wasn't the last time we'd share a stage together.
Since then I've played over 120 shows in so many different cities and venues that the details have become a little blurred and the memories recklessly filed in "the overall experience" section of my brain. But I will tell you, every time I step on stage with this dude I remember the details.

I had to go down to Orange County today to work on some new stuff for my live show (we just got a last minute invite to play at The Maloof Money Cup in Newport Beach this Saturday) ... we overshot our drive down there a little bit and headed further south ...
My boy John, who lives with Chris and me in Santa Monica, invited us to his uncle's office in San Diego to hang out for the afternoon. 99.9999% of the time this is a bad idea -- unless your uncle is ...

My mom bought me my first skateboard at Sport-Mart when I was in 6th grade. To say the least, this was a ''low budget'' piece of equipment. It was probably made for a few dollars in some country that didn't even have paved roads, making this slab of wood with four small urethane wheels quite mysterious to the assembler. Regardless, I rode that thing until it was no longer functional ... which meant four days later I ended up borrowing my friend's extra board for the next few years. I loved skating and was so passionate about it ... but let it go when high school hit, and the truly important things in life (football, basketball and girls) became top priority -- bummer.
Today though, there was a 11 year old boy named Kelley standing on the half pipe at Tony Hawk's office watching the magic unfold ... and smiling like he'd just got his first skateboard.

Nike's Innovation Kitchen (iK), at their headquarters in Beaverton Oregon, is where all the magic happens. Call it the world's greatest think tank for sneakers or the birthplace of the almighty Air Jordan. Anything goes and anything is possible.
For all you San Diego Chargers fans out there here's a little limited edition Air Force 1 they did for your boy LT -- P.S. I'm still not sure if the 1 is a pun.

My boy Kellen and I went for a run the other day in the hills of Sherman Oaks. After about a mile we saw something in the road that looked like a squirrel. It turned out to be an injured Great Horned Owl that couldn't fly. We called the humane society and they told us to put a box over it, give them an address where the box was and they'd be there in about 4 hrs to pick it up ... I was informed that there was only one guy working after-hours that night, responsible for covering all of LA county (which is only 4000+ sq miles).
We decided to take it upon ourselves to rescue this little guy and bring him to the humane society. Long story short, we spent 2 hrs trying to get the owl into a container - it attempted to fly away twice but couldn't make it more than 50 yards. After the 2nd attempt we were able to get it, unharmed, in a box and over to the humane society.

Shoes | June 18, 2008
Since I was a little kid I always loved shoes. The only problem was that I wasn't allowed to have more than a few pairs, and the cool ones were always out of the question. Never had Pumps. Never had Jordans. Never had those LA Gear's that lit up. Had to beg for Teva's - and no one wants to admit to that.
When I got a little bit older I would go to shoe stores and spend an embarrassing amount of time window shopping ... still under the impression that I wasn't allowed to indulge.
Then near the end of college I met a man named Scotty Crowe who let me know it was okay to own more shoes than the girl you were dating. A few too many pairs later I'm still on the hunt for the next sick pair of limited edition pink anything's that you'll never see again.
Our boy Scotty came backstage at the El Rey Theatre with a little surprise ...

After 4 1/2 months on the road I finally made it back to LA to reunite with the band for a show at The El Rey Theatre. To me this was the official kick-off to the summer. It was like signing your best friend's yearbook the last day of school after freshman year - "this is gonna be the best summer ever!"

Writing you from beautiful San Diego California. Chris and I flew here from Miami to play a show for Oakley last night. We fly back there this morning (only 16 hrs in SD). We'll do two more of these events in Vegas and Miami within the next few weeks. I must admit, the Oakley crew is the epitome of 'work hard/play hard'. I seem to always show up when the 'play' button is illuminated.
This was the last Oakley event I did in Park City Utah for the Sundance Film Festival. Just a small gathering that turned into madness.
Our boy Dingo introduced us.
Bird's Eye.
Had to bust the limited edition shades they gave us. Only 500 of these exist.
